Two new Parkinson's therapies reach the final stage of clinical trials

A new oral dopamine drug (tavapadon) and a stem-cell therapy (bemdaneprocel) are both advancing through late-stage trials toward possible approval.

Two very different Parkinson's therapies are moving into the final phase of testing. Tavapadon, developed by AbbVie, is an oral medication that selectively targets the D1 and D5 dopamine receptors. In the TEMPO trials it improved motor control with fewer side effects than older dopamine agonists, and a regulatory decision could come within roughly ten months of its September 2025 application.

The second, bemdaneprocel, comes from Bayer's BlueRock Therapeutics and takes a regenerative route: stem-cell-derived dopamine neurons are implanted into the brain to replace cells lost to the disease. It is beginning a global phase 3 trial (exPDite-2), with results expected over the next few years.

Together the two represent complementary strategies — immediate symptom management through medication, and longer-term repair through cell replacement — and signal a broadening of the Parkinson's treatment toolkit.
